News / My Haiti Experience

Ham Rambler @ 12:17 am

Helping Haiti: a first person report from Santo Domingo

I am an airline pilot, working for a UK airline called Astraeus (www.flystar.com). We were contacted a few hours after the earthquake occurred, to take the UK Fire Service Search and Rescue team down to Haiti. We couldn’t land in Port Au Prince on arrival so we went to Santo Domingo in neighbouring Dominican Republic instead. Over the next few days, I kept people up to date on what was going on using my facebook profile.

Yesterday, I uploaded a video I made when we brought the UKFS team back. You might find it interesting. http://bit.ly/aEISj4

News / Virtual Haiti Relief Chooses Hope For Haiti Now

Katydid Something @ 7:24 am

In a unanimous decision at the VHR meeting on Saturday, January 23rd, Hope For Haiti Now was chosen as the charity to which Virtual Haiti Relief will give donations collected from Second Life® residents. The decision was a week-long process which including polling the group members. But, as the telethon organized by actor George Clooney, a respected humanitarian, and Haiti’s own Wyclef Jean, got underway it occurred to many of us that their charity, Hope For Haiti Now, would be a great way to give to many charities at once. Go to the Our Charities page for more information.

News / Our Choice of Charity

Katydid Something @ 6:50 am

We took a poll and the results are tied between the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.
And we need to make a decision today in order to distribute the kiosks.

However, another charity, Hope for Haiti Now, has come to our attention which will distribute 100% of the donations to a number of charities, which was something that many people wanted in the first place. The charity is the group who staged the telethon last night and is led be actor George Clooney. Here is a list of the charities which, if we choose this route, our dontation would be distributed to:

The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund: www.clintonbushhaitifund.org
United Nations World Food Programme: www.wfp.org
Oxfam America: www.oxfamamerica.org
Partners in Health: www.pih.org or www.standwithhaiti.org
Red Cross: www.redcross.org
UNICEF: www.unicef.org
Yele Haiti Foundation: www.yele.org

For more information on Hope for Haiti Now you can read their FAQ page at https://hopeforhaitinow.org/FAQ.asp

In all honesty, if it were up to me, this is the route I would go. Hope for Haiti Now meets all the criteria of being well respected, 100% of Donations get passed on, the donations are distributed to a number of well-vetted, international charities including a Haitian charity. I’m a little disappointed that Doctors Without Borders is not here but Partners in Health IS here and that satisfies our desire of getting doctors and medical care and supplies to Haiti.

What do you all think? Let’s open it up for discussion here and then, can we vote on this at the meeting at 11SLT at Vesuvius?
